The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and fill the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
